Is Mexico Violating the USMCA on Biotech Imports?

March 09, 2022

Bob Bowman

Trade in agricultural products between the U.S. and Mexico is massive: the U.S. ships nearly $20 billion in farm exports to Mexico each year. But that relationship could be in jeopardy, thanks to what the Alliance for Trade Enforcement says is Mexico’s failure to apply fair treatment to imported biotechnology products. In fact, says Alliance executive director Brian Pomper, Mexico hasn’t approved a biotech product since 2018, basing its decisions on political considerations instead of science. On this episode, Pomper dissects the controversy and the policies of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on biotech and biopharmaceuticals, which he says are in violation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada-Agreement. How serious is the dispute, and can it solved under the USMCA? Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
