Can 3D Printing Help Fix Broken Supply Chains?

March 23, 2022

Bob Bowman

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has been touted for years as a revolution in goods production — one that’s able to meet the demands of today’s picky consumer. So why hasn’t it made more progress to date?

3D printing today accounts for about 0.1% of global manufacturing. And much of that activity consists of turning out prototypes and selected components. But Tali Rosman, general manager of additive manufacturing at Xerox, believes the technology has a much brighter future. On this episode, she explains why a process that’s hardly new has yet to reach its full potential, and where it’s most likely to shine in the years ahead. She also addresses some key questions: Can 3D printing scale? Can it be the key to realizing mass customization? Will it contribute to the reshoring of American manufacturing? And are we now 3D-printing entire houses? Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
