Charging Up the Battery Supply Chain to Meet Demand for EVs
Government and private industry alike have set ambitious targets for the production of electric vehicles. But will their efforts be short-circuited by a broken battery supply chain?
The Biden Administration wants EVs to account for half of all U.S. new-car sales by 2030. And California is mandating that all new vehicles sold in the state be electric or plug-in hybrids by 2035. So the future of driving is clearly electric, but will progress toward that goal be choked off by a scarcity of raw materials and gaps in the battery supply chain? On this episode, we get the big picture from Rohit Makharia, president and chief operating officer of SES, a developer of lithium-metal batteries incorporating artificial intelligence. He talks about what it will take to create and manage a “closed-loop” battery supply chain — and how long it might take to get there. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
