How Computer Language Models Will Transform the Business World

December 09, 2022

Bob Bowman

If a computer can convincingly replicate human text, where does that leave the human?

Computer scientists have been trying for decades to convincingly simulate the “voice” of a human writer. Now, that goal has essentially been achieved. The reason is GPT-3 (for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, third generation) — the latest version of a large-language model that uses artificial intelligence and deep learning to “predict” and ape the style of any given human author, based on a surprisingly small amount of prior input. The model is so effective that it has become extremely difficult to tell the difference between the written output of a human and that of a machine. On this episode, Scott Downes, chief technology officer of Invisible Technologies, discusses the importance and potential impact of GPT-3. Unveiled by OpenAI in 2020, the model is already having an impact on the business world, in its ability to generate original language and automate communication between stakeholders. So is there still a role in all this for humans? Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
