Lufthansa Cargo Beats Deadline for TSA Cargo-Screening Rules

Lufthansa Cargo AG is now performing 100-percent screening of outbound cargo shipments on passenger aircraft at the 17 U.S. airports that it serves, in line with tougher requirements imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The carrier met its scheduled implementation date a month ahead of time. Klaus Holler, vice president for the Americas with Lufthansa Cargo, said customers would not feel any negative effects from the heightened security requirements. Harald Zielinski, head of security and environmental management for the carrier, recently testified at a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C. He offered his views on where collaboration and communication between the industry and TSA can be strengthened, with an emphasis on trans-Atlantic cooperation and the recognition of mutual standards between the U.S. and Europe. In its 2009 fiscal year, Lufthansa transported approximately 1.5 million metric tons of freight and mail.
