PeopleNet Devises Optionally Portable Onboard Computer for Trucks

August 26, 2010

PeopleNet Communications Corp. has developed what it says is the first optionally portable onboard computer for the trucking industry. The company is a vendor of onboard computing and mobile communications systems for fleet management. The new product eliminates the need for additional handheld devices in the cab. Drivers can work in virtually any environment while combining traditional fix-mount and handheld computing systems, according to PeopleNet chief executive officer Ron Konezny. The system includes a rugged design and seven-inch touch screen, offering traditional in-cab functionality such as navigation, engine diagnostics, eDriver Logs, in-cab training, driver e-mail and messaging and geofencing. Portable options include a camera, barcode scanner, signature capture and Wi-Fi. The system runs on Tablet's Windows 7 operating platform, allowing for a wide range of peripherals, document formats and advanced applications. The optional built-in camera lets drivers photograph damaged goods and send photos to expedite replacement systems. In-cab navigation eliminates out-of-route miles and reduces fuel consumption, PeopleNet said. In addition to a docking station and option for hard mounting, Tablet comes with both soft and hard keyboard options. The product will be commercially available in the first quarter of 2011.
