Exel, a North American provider of contract logistics services, is joining with sister company DHL Supply Chain to construct a distribution center in Laredo, Tex. The 250,000 square-foot, build-to-suit facility is slated for completion in July 2012. It will serve as a hub for Logistics Without Borders, the companies' end-to-end supply-chain service for Exel and DHL Supply Chain customers shipping across the U.S./Mexico border. The multi-client, multi-sector operation will support Exel and DHL's customers' supply chains on both sides of the border. The companies expect to serve a number of sectors, including technology, automotive, engineering and manufacturing. The facility will support certifications such as those of the Transported Asset Protection Association and Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism. Capabilities will include managed transportation, warehousing, cross-docking, U.S. and Mexico customs and brokerage, drayage, bonded warehousing and value-added services such as product configuration. The companies plan to pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the site.
