NYK Logistics (Americas) Inc. has officially opened its new logistics center in Norfolk, Va. Built at a cost of $27m, the facility consists of more than 130,000 square feet on 35 acres of land. It will have 182 dock doors and more than 770 parking slots for port-related distribution activities. The Norfolk Logistics Center is an ISO 9001:2000-certified warehouse and logistics facility, with the ability to handle more than 300 import containers a day. Yearly throughput is anticipated to exceed 75m cartons, NYK Logistics said. Certified as a U.S. Customs bonded warehouse, the Norfolk location will employ more than 375 workers during peak operations. It will house all three of NYK Logistics' divisions - warehouse, transportation and international - under one roof. Services offered there will include supply-chain management, overseas consolidation, transloading, and ocean and air freight transportation. Based in Long Beach, Calif., NYK Logistics (America) has some 60 offices in the U.S. It is affiliated with Japan's Nippon Yusen Kaisha.
