DHL has opened a new facility at the Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Adding to its existing operations at the location, the company has created a $1.6m on-airport facility serving Baltimore and surrounding areas. With 25 percent more space than the previous operation, the center includes improved material-handling equipment for aircraft-container loading and unloading. It covers 18,663 square feet. Locations to be served in addition to Baltimore include various points in Howard County, such as Columbia, Elkridge, Hanover and Jessup. Additional load positions can accommodate more vehicles and freight volumes, DHL said. The company has been engaged in a nationwide expansion of its service network, in locations such as New York City; Columbus, OH; Chicago, Ill.; Charlotte, N.C.; Salt Lake City, Utah and Atlanta, Ga. DHL also recently completed a $1.2bn buildout of its U.S. domestic network and infrastructure, including an expanded primary air and ground hub in Wilmington, Ohio and seven new Regional Sort Centers.
