The Government Accountability Office has agreed to a request from three Republican lawmakers to look into the way that the administration came up with the metric, which is used to calculate the benefits to the public from new regulations curbing carbon emissions.

Critics on both sides of the aisle have worried that the value was developed behind closed doors, without sufficient oversight and input from the public.

Earlier this month, Reps. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), John Culberson (R-Texas) and Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) asked the GAO to investigate how the administration developed the new value, who was consulted and whether officials followed federal rulemaking guidelines.
