Menlo Worldwide Government Services, LLC, a division of logistics service provider Menlo Worldwide, has been designated prime contractor for the U.S. Defense Transportation Initiative. DTCI is a program under the Defense Department's U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM). Its mission is to improve domestic transportation and distribution operations for all four branches of the U.S. military. Working under a contract with a potential value of $1.6bn, Menlo will deploy and operate an integrated logistics program for shipment planning, optimization and execution. It will also manage transportation resources for all shipments of materiel among Defense Department facilities in the 48 contiguous United States. Menlo is expected to draw on the "best commercial practices" for load consolidation and optimization, with an eye toward boosting the reliability of freight movements while reducing transport expense. DTCI aims to increase efficiency by better synchronizing some 260 independent shipping sites and hundreds of transportation service providers. Menlo's subcontractors in the engagement include Computer Sciences Corp., for I.T. infrastructure housing, network management and integration services; ONE Network Enterprises Inc., for transportation-management software with shipment planning, optimization and execution capabilities; and Olgoonik Logistics, for professional services in support of minority-owned and small business firms working for DTCI.
