The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased by 1.7 percent when compared to August 2013. Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers increased marginally. Fuel was 20.63 percent of base rates in September versus 20.12 percent in August.
"This is the first base cost increase since March 2013," said Doug Payne, president and chief operating officer of Nulogx, a provider of transportation management services and technology, and sponsor of the CGFI. "Total costs and base freight costs are still 2.0 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively, below last year."
