The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased by 3.0 percent when compared to November 2014. Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers increased this month. Fuel was 18.56 percent of base rates in December versus 17.95 percent in November.
"Total freight costs continue to rise driven by truckload activity in December," said Doug Payne, president and COO of Nulogx, a transportation management solution provider and sponsor of the CGFI. "Cross-border and domestic LTL total costs slid in December, but were outweighed by the cross-border and domestic TL increases. LTL costs have continued to drop in 2014, particular in the second half. Truckload costs, however, have been increasing over the past several months, and the cross-border TL is significantly higher than December of 2013. This has produced an overall cost that is slightly higher in December 2014 than the same time in 2013," said Payne.
