The 3,000 PrimeLINE units include 1,000 reefer boxes equipped with Carrier Transicold's XtendFRESH controlled-atmosphere system. It manages oxygen and carbon dioxide levels within refrigerated containers, and removes ethylene, thus slowing the ripening of produce and boosting product quality beyond the capability of traditional refrigeration. As oxygen is consumed by the perishable cargo, on-demand fresh air ventilation automatically maintains the optimal level within the container. Hapag-Lloyd’s order is the largest for the XtendFRESH option since its introduction in 2013. The PrimeLINE units were installed on 40-foot high-cube containers that the carrier purchased for fleet replacement and expansion. The new units are being deployed in support of the South American harvest season, according to Hapag-Lloyd.
