The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, was flat from March.
Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers increased this month. Fuel was 10.88 percent of base rates in April versus 10.32 percent in March.
"Overall, total freight costs declined marginally in April," said Doug Payne, president and chief operating officer of Nulogx, a provider of transportation management solutions and the sponsor of the CGFI. "Domestic truckload and LTL were positive. However, the cross-border truckload and LTL showed a strong decrease. Year over year, all segments (domestic truckload & LTL and cross-border truckload and LTL) are all below last year's costs with trans-border being significantly lower.”
