National Retail Systems (NRS) recently marked the official opening of its new cross-dock facility in Pooler, Ga., three miles from the Port of Savannah. The center is designed for high-speed, high-volume transloading operations. Occupying 52 acres, it features 176 doors and the capability to handle special projects for retailers. The building was designed to process several hundred thousand containers per year. Raymond Wisniewski, president and chief operating officer of NRS, said it was crucial for retailers to have access to distribution infrastructure. In 2006, the company embarked on a Gateway Ports Strategy, involving the placement of facilities close to key gateways. The move has boosted distribution efficiency, is more environmentally responsible and benefits truck drivers as well, Wisniewski said. At the Pooler facility, NRS will perform a wide array of retail logistics services, including pier drayage, container transload, distribution-center bypass, store delivery, nationwide truckload and special-project retail services such as ticketing, marking and labeling. The Port of Savannah last year handled a record 2.6m twenty-foot equivalent container units.
