Hauling things is the business of Rogers Group, and this year it will celebrate its centennial of transporting crushed stone, hot mix asphalt, sand and gravel, asphalt paving, retaining block/wall, and other road construction materials. But moving things generates a mountain of paper.
An in-house group proposed that Rogers purchase a document imaging system. Their selling point: The company would eliminate external storage costs for the vast amount of paperwork the hauling generated and eliminate the costs of updating and maintaining its cumbersome and outdated microfiche and paper documentation system. "We were able to persuade upper management that the (document imaging) system would easily pay for itself based on external storage costs and elimination of microfiche costs," says Roger Kenigson, project leader, information systems for Rogers Group. Other selling points--a new system would allow simultaneous review of like documents and eliminate the problem of unrecoverable documentation.
