Checkpoint Systems has partnered with Sealed Air Cryovac to launch an anti-theft tagging product for food shipments. Checkpoint is a manufacturer and marketer of identification, tracking, security and merchandising systems for retail industry supply chains. Sealed Air Cryovac makes a wide range of food and protective-packaging materials and systems. The new product targets frequently stolen products such as cheese. Cryovac is using the system to protect supplies of Parmagiano Reggiano and Grana Padano. The former has a shrink rate of around 9 percent in Italy, according to Rob van der Merwe, president and chief executive officer of Checkpoint. The company's collaboration with Cryovac dates back to early 2007. The partners initiated a label and source-tagging program designed to protect food, such as meat and dairy products. Checkpoint developed the first label to receive European authorization and ISEGA certification, according to the company. It was designed for direct contact with dry, moist and fatty food products. The label also meets U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines for direct food contact. Subsequently, Cryovac set up a manufacturing system to integrate Checkpoint's Food-Safe anti-theft label inside its vacuum shrink bags.
