Freight Management Inc. has introduced a program known as OptiGreen, to help shippers reduce their carbon footprint. The effort is built around the Distribution Pollution Solution (DPS), FMI's new software for calculating carbon emissions between the departure and arrival of a shipment. According to the vendor, the application can also help companies to reduce fuel costs and operate with greater efficiency when shipping to multiple distribution centers. The DPS calculator creates a report showing the amount of cargo emissions generated. The information comes from research by industry experts along with standards outlined in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Initiative. The OptiGreen program uses those reports to explore alternative means of shipping, as well as ways to consolidate shipments moving to and from the same locations. FMI recently was awarded a SmartWay Certification by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for its efforts to reduce pollutants through the use of transportation-management programs and software.
