Polzug Intermodal GmbH has opened a new rail terminal in Wroclaw, Poland to serve a growing local market in consumer electronics and the automotive industry. Demand for container transportation in Poland has continued to increase as manufacturers of consumer electronics, household appliances and automotive goods open production facilities in Poland, serving markets throughout the European Union. The new facility covers 45,000 square meters. It has storage capacity of 2,200 twenty-foot equivalent units, with four reach-stackers, two cranes and two terminal traction engines. It can handle containers from 20 to 45 feet in length. The intermodal terminal will offer daily service to and from the ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Rotterdam. Polzug was formed in 1991 to provide intermodal services into Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe, with the opening of trade after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Last year, the company reported, Polzug carried some 145,000 TEUs to and from Poland, Central and Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Russia, among other locations.
