Logica, a provider of information technology and business services, has begun work on a project known as Euridice. The venture is an intelligent cargo system which will create advanced information services for freight transportation in Europe. Euridice, which stands for European interdisciplinary Research on Intelligent Cargo for Efficient Safe and Environmentally Friendly logistics, is being co-funded by the European Commission. The current phase of the project is scheduled for completion by 2011. According to Logica, the system will address a number of challenges confronting freight transportation in the areas of logistics, business and public policy. It will enable cargo to interact with its surrounding environment, actively notifying relevant parties of its status, location and identity requirements. It will draw on information from a broad range of track-and-trace technologies, such as radio frequency identification, general packet radio services and satellite positioning. Euridice is backed by 22 organizations in the IT and freight transport sector. Logica is responsible for the concept, technological solutions and underlying business models.
