Supply-chain congestion may be easing in some quarters, but not at the swamped rail yards and container terminals around Chicago, says The Wall Street Journal.
Truckers like independent driver Mateo Carrera are coping with choked-up freight facilities and troublesome equipment shortages, as bottlenecks at U.S. seaports and warehouses ripple across distribution channels to one of America’s busiest cargo hubs. Carrera often spends hours shuttling between freight yards and distribution centers simply to shift empty containers around to free up a chassis to handle shipments.
The shortage of the vital truck trailer equipment is one result of the flood of imports that has swamped inland operations since the chassis are often used to hold sea containers because warehouses are so crowded. That has become a pain point in the Chicago region, adding time and complications to logistics operations.
