Walmart announced June 13 that the organization would be opening its first owned and operated case-ready beef facility in Kansas in 2025. The new facility is set to break ground sometime in 2023 in Olathe, Kansas.
The plans to open the new venue highlight how Walmart is building a more resilient supply chain while increasing customers’ access to high-quality Angus beef. Walmart expects the facility will provide greater visibility into the company’s supply chain and create more than 600 jobs for the Olathe community.
“Technological advances in the food supply chain continue to reshape the industry,” said Kansas Governor Laura Kelly. “Walmart’s innovative new facility further solidifies Kansas’ position as one of the nation’s top food and agriculture states.”
Walmart has been working to create an end-to-end supply chain for Angus beef since the company first announced its intentions in April 2019. In fact, in August 2022, Walmart signed an agreement to acquire a minority stake in Sustainable Beef LLC, a rancher-owned company based in Nebraska that produces and distributes high-quality meat products. Once the new facility is opened, it will package and distribute a selection of products from Sustainable Beef LLC to Walmart stores across the midwestern United States.
