Talks resumed July 8 between the B.C. Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada, ending a long stretch away from the negotiating table after talks broke off July 4.
During the meeting, the BCMEA introduced a revised proposal aimed at resolving skilled trade shortages while also addressing ILWU Canada’s hopes to expand its jurisdiction over regular terminal maintenance workers.
In a statement, the BCMEA said it is committed to increasing benefits for casual traders, boosting industry apprenticeships by at least 15% and creating tool allowance benefits for trade workers. Additionally, the organization included a provision that would establish a joint Maintenance Review sub-committee chaired by an independent arbitrator that would make recommendations for both sides throughout the negotiation process.
“The most recent proposal shows the BCMEA’s commitment to reach an agreement,” the organization wrote. “We believe a deal can be reached if ILWU Canada wants one. We know that the best deals are made at the table, and this is exactly what we are proposing the Parties do.”
