The United States announced July 14 that it was partnering with the government of Costa Rica to create more semiconductor supply chain opportunities. The partnership was enabled by the International Technology Security and Innovation (ITSI) Fund which was established as part of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022.
In a statement, the U.S. Department of State said that the two sides will explore opportunities to diversify and expand the global semiconductor market while creating a more transparent, sustainable and secure global semiconductor supply chain.
The partnership will begin with a review of Costa Rica’s semiconductor industry and regulatory framework as well as an analysis of the country’s workforce and infrastructure needs. Based on those reviews, the two countries will further develop and plan future collaborations within the semiconductor sector.
“The United States views Costa Rica as a partner in ensuring the semiconductor supply chain can keep pace with the digital transformation underway,” said Cynthia Telles, the U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica. “Products ranging from vehicles to medical devices increasingly rely on semiconductors as the building blocks of today’s economy. Our announcement of this collaboration underscores the significant potential to expand this industry in Costa Rica to the benefit of both our countries.”
