Contract negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters Union representing 340,000 UPS workers are set to resume during the week of July 23, marking the first time that the two sides will meet for contract talks since they walked away from the negotiating table in early July.
In a statement released July 19, the Teamsters said that UPS reached out to the union to resume the negotiation process. The dates for the resumed contract talks have not yet been announced.
The Teamsters said that they are seeking a new five-year agreement that increases the number of full-time jobs UPS offers, addresses health and safety concerns related to heat, provides more protection from managerial harassment, eliminates the two-tier wage 22.4 job classification — which designates junior drivers who work Tuesdays through Saturdays — and guarantees better pay.
UPS said that it is pleased to be continuing contract negotiations, and that it is prepared to meet some of the union’s demands for better pay and more benefits.
“We are pleased to be back at the negotiating table next week to resolve the few remaining open issues,” the company said July 19. “We are prepared to increase our industry-leading pay and benefits but need to work quickly to finalize a fair deal that provides certainty for our customers, our employees and businesses across the country.”
Both the Teamsters Union and UPS have said that the new contract is 95% complete, according to CNN. The two sides have until July 31 to strike a new deal before the current contract expires.
