Apple’s main supplier, Foxconn Technology Group, is planning to invest almost $500 million to build a pair of components factories in India.
A formal announcement regarding the investment plan could come as early as this week.
At least one of the factories being built in Karnataka will produce parts for Apple products, including iPhones, according to people familiar with the matter that spoke to Bloomberg. The exact locations of the facilities have not yet been decided.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment. Foxconn also did not respond to an emailed request for comment.
Prior to the most recent investment announcement, Foxconn also unveiled plans to invest $700 million to build a different factory in Karnataka. That venue will create up to 100,000 jobs and likely be used to assemble iPhones.
The Taiwanese multinational technology company also signed an initial agreement with the government of Tamil Nadu July 31 to establish a components plant with the help of an investment worth roughly $195 million. That planned project, in the Kanchipuram district, is expected to create almost 6,000 jobs.
In early July, Foxconn pulled out of a $19.5 billion joint venture project with the Indian organization Vedanta that would have brought display and semiconductor manufacturing capabilities to the state of Gujarat.
