Halloween-related supply chain activity is accelerating after peak U.S. imports arrived in June rather than July or August like in previous years, according to a report.
In a recent study from S&P Market Intelligence, entitled “Halloween creeps a little closer: Seasonal supply chains accelerate,” the analysis found that U.S. seaborne imports of Halloween products were down 6% when compared to the same peak three-month period in 2022. Meanwhile, outfit shipments fell by 13%.
The report did show that there has been a rebound in clown-themed costume shipments, which increased by 43% year-over-year. Shipments of costumes for pets also grew by 15% from 2022 to 2023.
Surprisingly, shipments of Barbie-themed outfits declined this year despite the success of the recently released Barbie movie, which has grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide as of August 25, 2023, according to Box Office Mojo.
Some major companies like The Walt Disney Co., The Home Depot, and Michaels have already either installed Halloween displays or decided to put out decorations and outfits earlier than in previous years.
Christmas decorations are also going on sale earlier in 2023. However, S&P said that it is too soon to determine whether the 25% year-over-year increase in Christmas product shipments in July was due to early shipping or a highly anticipated, more festive winter season.
Data for the report from S&P, a global provider of financial and industry data, was collected by Panjiva and S&P Market Intelligence on August 17, 2023.
