Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is looking to cut the weight of electric vehicle batteries by 50% to improve the business’ sustainability, said the organization’s chief technology officer, Ned Curic, September 8.
Curic explained that the current weight of EV batteries is “too heavy,” which makes the vehicles “not compatible” with the company’s sustainability goals.
"So, what I have in mind, and a very hard goal for my team by 2030, is to change the battery weight to at least 50% lighter battery," Curic said during the opening of Stellantis’ Battery Technology Center in Turin, Italy.
In an attempt to improve its batteries, Stellantis recently invested $43 million in its Turn-based Battery Technology Center, which will focus on the in-house testing and development of EV battery packs for future vehicles, according to Reuters. The company also built a similar facility in Windsor, Canada.
Still, Curic said he has “no idea” what the EV “battery of the future” will look like.
"We will have to think about completely new materials, new chemistry, a new way of replacing this heavy, heavy, heavy materials to something much lighter," he said.
Curic added that the organization will be launching a “very affordable” vehicle later in 2023, although he did not give an indication of what its price will be.
