Macy’s workers in the U.S. are planning to strike on Black Friday after employees alleged the company used unfair labor practices, and the organization failed to agree on a new union contract with its workers.
According to The Guardian, 400 Macy’s employees working in the state of Washington are planning strike actions after 96% of workers voted in favor of striking back in October 2023.
The union, UFCW Local 3,000, is planning a striking workers parade that will take place on Black Friday at the Macy’s Southcenter location in Tukwila, outside of Seattle. Other workers represented by the union are expected to take part in the parade.
The union has been asking for an increase in wages during contract negotiations. However, the starting pay in the most recent contract with Macy’s was at or close to the state’s minimum wage rate, which will grow to $16.28 per hour on January 1, 2024.
“We would like them to share some of those profits so we can have a livable wage,” said Azia Domingo, who has worked at a Macy’s store in Tukwila, Washington for 21 years. “Macy’s CEO gets $11 million per year while a lot of his workers rely on food banks, and some can’t even afford to see doctors because of the low wages and the expensive healthcare.”
“Macy’s seeks to reach a deal that is mutually beneficial to the colleague, company and union,” wrote a Macy’s spokesperson in an email response to the strike and demands being made by workers for a new contract.
