CSC Jinling announced December 6 that it was awarded approval in principle (AiP) from the marine vessel classification society DNV for its 11,000-CEU capacity pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) design.
According to Offshore Energy, the 234-meter-long, 40-meter-wide ship would be the world’s largest PCTC with 14 decks that allow 11,000 car equivalent units to be stored simultaneously.
The design, dubbed the “Super Large Smart Green 11,000,” is expected to reduce carbon emissions in line with the requirements outlined by the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).
The vessel will use liquified natural gas (LNG) as its main fuel source and will be equipped with a 1.1 million liquid gallon storage tank.
The ship is being constructed with assistance from the naval architecture and engineering firm Deltamarin.
“We expect the market for electric vehicles to continue to grow, driving demand for PCTCs. Scale, energy efficiency and low carbon fuel are key to reducing emissions from the transport of these vessels,” said Norbert Kray, the regional manager of Greater China at DNV Maritime. “As a leading class for car carriers, DNV is honored to be entrusted with the assessment of this next generation of car carriers and we look forward to working with China Merchants to bring these vessels to the water.”
