Toyota Motor North America announced it was teaming up with the battery material services and recycling company Cirba Solutions in order to expand its battery recycling network.
According to ABC News, Toyota said December 7 that its battery collection efforts will include hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs.
The partnership will focus on the collection, transportation, breaking down and processing of end-of-life lithium-ion EV batteries from the midwest and eastern U.S. Processing will take place at Cirba’s Lancaster, Ohio facility. Toyota said the plant has an up to 95% recovery rate.
“Cirba Solutions’ large and well-established transportation and recycling network ensures Toyota has nationwide battery collection and recycling to reduce both our costs as well as our operational carbon footprint,” said Christopher Yang, group vice president of Business Development at Toyota Motor North America, in a statement.
Toyota said that the agreement with Criba Solutions will reduce its overall logistics and transportation costs by at least 70% based on data from 2022.
Toyota said it currently collects about 25,000 used car batteries annually from its dealership network and expects that number to increase as the organization sells more EVs.
