AT&T said it will purchase some electric vehicles from the automotive start-up Rivian as part of a pilot program aimed at reducing costs, improving safety and cutting emissions. The businesses did not announce the financial terms of the deal or how many vehicles AT&T will be buying.
The American telecommunications company said December 14 that that it expects to add Rivian electric commercial vans, RIT pickup trucks and R1S sport utility vehicles to its fleet in early 2024.
According to Reuters, the agreement is the first for Rivian since the organization ended an exclusivity pact with Amazon for delivery vans, opening the door for the company to take on new customers.
AT&T has said that it has been investing heavily in converting its commercial fleet to vehicles that use alternative fuel sources.
"This pilot is another important step in our ongoing efforts toward sustainability, reducing our carbon footprint and embracing a cleaner future for our operations," said Hardmon Williams, the senior vice president of AT&T Connected Solutions.
Though Rivian said that it has seen “a lot of interest and demand” for its vans beyond Amazon, the company did not disclose other potential customers. Rivian also reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling an order of 100,000 vans for Amazon by 2030.
