Toyota Motor Co. is recalling one million vehicles due to a defect that would cause cars’ airbags to potentially fail to deploy.
According to The Guardian, the recall announced December 20 covers several types of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the U.S. from 2020 to 2022, including Toyota Avalons, Camrys, Highlanders, RAV4s, Siennas and Corollas as well as some hybrids. The ES250 Sedan and the RX350 SUV are among the Lexus models highlighted in the recall.
The company said the recalled vehicles might have sensors in the front passenger seat that were improperly manufactured. This could potentially lead to a short circuit that causes the airbag system to not accurately predict a passenger's weight, or properly deploy in certain types of crashes.
Lexus and Toyota dealers said they will inspect vehicles’ Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors and replace them free of charge if necessary. Toyota said that it will notify customers if their cars are being recalled by the middle of February 2024.
This is the third major recall by Toyota since the summer ended. In November, the organization recalled 1.9 million RAV4 SUVs in the U.S. because the batteries could shift while the vehicles made sharp turns, which could potentially lead to a fire. Prior to that, the company recalled 700,000 Toyota Highlanders in October to replace mounting tabs that hold the front bumper cover assembly in place.
