CaseStack has expanded its consolidation program with the addition of a facility in Laredo, TX. The move is intended to support logistics from Mexican manufacturers of consumer-packaged goods to U.S. retailers, especially Wal-Mart Stores. Shipments under the new operation are due to arrive at Wal-Mart distribution centers, direct from the Laredo port of entry, beginning Oct. 1. Located a few miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, the cross-docking location will serve as a gateway for Mexican products entering the U.S. market. Instead of shipping products by less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers and multiple locations prior to final destination, the vendor will combine each product into a full truckload and move it directly to a Wal-Mart D.C. The arrangement reduces total transit time as well as carbon dioxide emissions, CaseStack said. Other potential benefits, according to the vendor, include on-time delivery rates averaging 97 percent, reduced consumer product costs and fewer LTL movements on the roadways. The cross-docking opportunities in Laredo will provide a new vendor pool for Wal-Mart as well as transportation to all 42 of the retailer's regional distribution centers nationwide.
