Toyota Motor announced that it would be restarting its Japanese vehicle plants just a week after a massive earthquake hit the country. The company also said that it would be separately making decisions about the plants' operations from January 15.
According to Yahoo! Finance, Toyota said that it would be using in-stock parts acquired outside of the areas affected by the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that ravaged the west coast of Japan on New Year's Day.
Company president Koji Sato said January 5 that Toyota is currently attempting to determine how its supply chain would be affected after suppliers Sumitomo Electric and Aisin suffered damage during the quake.
As of January 5, about 80% of the organization’s 200 plants in the earthquake-affected areas had either resumed production or announced plans to resume production soon, said Ken Saitō, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
As of January 6, more than 200 people are still missing, while another 100 individuals have been confirmed dead after the earthquake hit the Noto peninsula on the coast of northwest Tokyo.
