American exports of agricultural and related products topped out at $191 billion in 2023, a 10% drop-off from 2022. According to Reuters, the $191 billion generated represents a three-year low in terms of farming and agricultural exports coming out of the U.S.
Exports of bulk commodities, which include items such as cotton, corn, wheat and soybeans, hit a ten-year low in terms of volume in 2023, according to data published February 7 by the U.S. Census Bureau. Exports of those commodities were down 17% when compared to 2022, the largest year-on-year drop-off since 1985. U.S. corn-plus-soy exports in 2023 totaled 94 million tons, an 18% year-over-year.
The data also showed that China was the destination for only 38% of U.S. cargoes in December, down from the month’s three-year average of 58%.
Overall, total U.S. exports, which include goods and services, grew by 1% in 2023 to a new record of $3.05 trillion. Agriculture and related products accounted for just 6.2% of all U.S. exports in 2023, representing a four-year low and down from shares exceeding 7% the previous three years.
Canada, China and Mexico accounted for roughly half of all U.S. agricultural exports in 2023, with Canada edging out China for the top spot for the first time in four years.
Mexico brought in a 15.6% share of U.S. agricultural exports last year, up from 13.9% in 2022. Meanwhile, Canada made up a 17.3% share of American agricultural exports, a high not seen since 2006. China’s portion of agricultural exports from the U.S. fell from a record 19.2% in 2022 to a four-year low of 16.6% in 2023.
