Best Buy, Microsoft, and Junk Kouture have announced a partnership to promote responsible recycling of e-waste in celebration of Earth Month in April.
For the entire month, customers are encouraged to recycle eligible laptops and tablets at Best Buy to save $50 on a Microsoft Surface. Devices brought in will be repurposed by Junk Kouture, where high school students will then use them to create sustainable fashion designs as part of a global competition.
Junk Kouture's competition includes schools in London, Milan, Paris, Dublin, New York City, and Abu Dhabi. For their Earth Month partnership with Best Buy and Microsoft, though, they'll be focused on four New York schools, as students at Glen Cove High School, Fordham High School for the Arts, the High School of Fashion Industries, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School take the recycled electronics provided by Best Buy and upcycle them into "wearable pieces that hold a global message about recycling."
"We are merging the worlds of fashion, technology, and sustainability," Junk Kouture chief content office Jane Smith said. "At Junk Kouture, we strive to empower aspiring designers to view waste as tomorrow’s resources, while also showcasing the creative talent of students who are pioneering behavioral changes in recycling."
