British supermarket chain Asda is testing out in-store digital display screens to extend the range of liquor available for purchase beyond what is displayed on the shelves.
According to the Retail Gazette, the screens will be available at 23 Asda Express locations in the United Kingdom, so that customers can select their choice of spirits. The new system — launched as a collaboration with beverage company Diageo — expands Asda's selection of liquor from around 26 products to 50, allowing stores to keep additional stock in the back room.
“As we continue to build our presence in the convenience sector, we are committed to trialing new and innovative technology across our business to continuously improve and modernize shopping experience for our customers," Asda senior director of channel operations James Law told the Gazette.
Shoppers will first have to confirm their age, and then get a printed ticket, which they can bring to the checkout counter for processing.
Screens will be placed on shelves in alcohol aisles, and are already available at U.K. Asda Express locations in Hull, Birmingham, Surrey, London and Stoke-on-Trent.
