Time is running out for the healthcare supply chain to fully comply with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act.
The DSCSA comes into full effect in November, after a one-year “stabilization period” allowed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Years in the making, the law imposes a single federal standard for serialization of prescription drugs — mandating their tracking and tracing at the package level as they move through the supply chain, including for manufacturing, distribution and sale at pharmacies. On this episode, we get the details from Gregg Gorniak, vice president of manufacturer operations and data services, secure supply chain lead at Cencora, a drug wholesaler and contract researcher. He traces the history of the DSCSA, and explains why it took so long for the healthcare supply chain to acquire the processes and technology necessary to comply with it. Yet even with that prolonged period of crafting and implementing the law, many entities are still not addressing its requirements with the proper urgency, Gorniak says. He tells us how they can catch up — and the possible penalties for failing to do so. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
