APL Logistics has won the RFID tagging solution business of Silicon Valley-based Netgear, a provider of wireless networking equipment. APL Logistics will affix RFID tags to cases of Netgear product sent to selected Best Buy stores in the U.S.
The deal highlights a growing trend among major retailers who mandate that their suppliers use RFID tags on shipments.
"We've been an industry leader in developing RFID services to customers," says Brian Lutt, president of APL Logistics. "And we have one of the first laboratories created to test new applications of the technology. So we're pleased that Netgear has chosen us to help meet their RFID mandate."
APL Logistics says it won the RFID business because it developed a low-cost tagging process predicated on a barcode labeling system-known as the ASN Tool Kit-already deployed internationally to support barcode label printing and scanning for a variety of APL Logistics customers. The process was tested at APL Logistics' Advanced Technology Center in Singapore.
