Outdoor clothing company Patagonia is partnering up with nonprofit Canopy on an initiative to invest in sustainable packaging materials.
Canopy's Pack4Good initiative calls on companies to reduce waste and avoid using packaging materials sourced from trees in any of the world's ancient and endangered forests. The nonprofit estimates that paper packaging is responsible for the logging of 3.1 billion trees each year, threatening the habitats of rare and endangered animals and intensifying climate change conditions across the globe. More than 400 brands have signed onto Pack4Good, with Patagonia joining the initiative on September 5.
As part of that partnership, Patagonia will develop and scale up so-called "next generation" packaging solutions, by using materials such as agricultural waste and recycled pulp and paper. In 2019, the company also set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2025, by installing solar arrays at headquarters and various distribution centers, and using biodegradable materials in their clothing, among several other initiatives.
