In an effort to identify mature explosives-detection technologies to screen cargo loaded onto passenger aircraft, the Transportation and Security Administration is planning a 5-year testing program both in labs and in the field. The Multi-Technology Assessment program will try to determine the probability of detection and false alarms when equipment looks for explosives in eight different types of cargo: electronics, fresh flowers, machine parts, miscellaneous durable goods, printed materials, fresh produce, fresh or frozen seafood or meats, and wearing apparel.
Up to $6m from fiscal year 2007 air cargo supplemental funds will be available for TSA to lease or purchase screening technologies for the program.
