Case study: Less-than-truckload carrier PITT OHIO increases efficiency and reduces costs of its pickup, delivery and linehaul business by replacing outdated legacy systems with an AI-powered platform from Maven. A finalist and runner-up in the 2024 Supply Chain Innovation Award, presented by SupplyChainBrain and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
PITT OHIO sought to update its legacy technology for mobile computing. It needed “a modernized platform to take us into the world of artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud-based computing,” according to chief information officer Scott Sullivan.
The carrier chose Maven, provider of AI-driven software for transportation management, to supply a platform that could be applied to the company’s fleet of 2,500 drivers across 25 terminals. Implementation was completed in just nine months, says Paige Creo, vice president of marketing with Maven.
Drivers had told PITT OHIO that its legacy system “was in the Stone Age,” Sullivan says. The new technology operates on tablets and phones, allowing drivers to take it out of the cab, and making deployment easier.
The platform ended up saving drivers an average of 20 minutes a day. It enables them to flag issues in real time to customer service in the event a delivery is refused, a customer is closed, or redelivery is required. In addition, Sullivan says, the tool has improved communications between drivers and dispatchers, providing updates on changing customer needs, weather concerns and traffic conditions.
PITT OHIO expects to make additional improvements to its transportation system, with an eye toward eliminating paper by capturing images of confirming documents at time of pickup, Sullivan says.
Maven chief executive officer Avi Geller says the software will also aid in route planning, allowing PITT OHIO to account for factors such as the length of stops and frequency of drivers’ breaks.
