Boeing is planning to lay off nearly 2,200 workers in the state of Washington, with the company planning to eventually cut 17,000 jobs across the U.S., or 10% of its total workforce.
The company posted the Washington layoffs to the state's Employment Security Department portal on November 15. A week before that, 438 Boeing engineers and technicians also received layoff notices. In a note to employees in October, CEO Kelly Ortberg told workers that the company needed to align its staffing levels with its "financial reality," in the wake of a troubled year marred by production slowdowns, a lengthy machinists strike, a $243 million fraud settlement, and the blowout of a door plug aboard a 737 Max 9.
According to The Seattle Times, most workers who have recently received layoff notices will remain on Boeing's payroll through mid-January, and will get career-transition services and subsidized health care benefits for up to three weeks, as well as one week of severance pay for every year they've worked for the company. The planemaker is also reportedly mulling a second round of layoffs, which would be announced sometime in December.
