Is the demise of physical retailing coming faster than anyone might expect?
Without a doubt, e-commerce has taken a sizable chunk out of traditional retail sales over recent years. Currently its share of the total stands at just over 16% in the U.S., but the number is growing. And at least one analyst says physical retailing will be effectively dead much sooner than we might think. The reason is technology, according to Jack Freeman, partner with PeakSpan Capital LLC, and our guest on this episode. He lays out all of the ways in which technology applications are shaping the e-commerce experience, including pinpoint personalization, to an extent not possible with brick-and-mortar merchandising. So does physical retailing stand a chance, for anything other than dashing out to the corner store for a bottle of milk? Freeman acknowledges that brick-and-mortar still has some cards to play, but he’s convinced that in the end, the game goes to online sellers.
