Con-way Freight, the less-than-truckload (LTL) subsidiary of Con-way Inc., has opened a new service center in Rockford, Ill. Housed within the Rock 39 Industrial Park along the I-39 logistics corridor, the center is offering next-day delivery throughout Illinois and within a 600-mile radius. The facility, under construction since November, 2007, more than doubles the size of Con-way Freight's previous operation in the area. It features nearly 50,000 square feet of dock space and 110 dock doors for loading and unloading trailers. A staff of 100 can process approximately one million pounds of freight and 900 shipments per day, servicing some 700 business accounts in the area. The Rockford facility is part of a major network-reengineering project by Con-way Freight, aimed at create more efficient operations and improved service. The project is expected to result in 124,000 fewer miles traveled per day, representing 5.2 percent of the 2.4m miles those Con-way drivers run on a typical day.
