Namasco Corp., which distributes steel structural products (such as plate, sheet and bar) to more than 8,000 metalworking and fabrication businesses across the United States, has taken measures to maximize its fleet efficiency. The company has 30 warehouses throughout the United States and a fleet of 225 diesel flatbed tractor-trailers with 240 drivers. "Over the years it has become much more expensive to operate our fleet," says Len Stark, director of technical services at Namasco. "A few years ago, we decided to find a solution to help us measure our fleet's performance to maximize its efficiency." To do so, Namasco began using GPS in 2003 and has since added a route optimization solution. The technology investments are saving Namasco more than $500,000 per year in fuel costs.
