The goal of an effective leader is to build a community of supply management professionals, and that is done by building trust. It must be clear to staff that changes are being made not to do harm--but to make them successful. Trust is built by supporting staff and implementing programs to raise their capabilities. As leaders build trust, they should demonstrate both passion and compassion--a passion for procurement and what it can achieve, and compassion toward staff members who are working to make changes and to improve and strengthen their skills.
