DHL has opened a new gateway and customer-service call center for Mexico. Located at Mexico City International Airport, the gateway has the ability to inspect 100 percent of import shipments using an advanced X-ray system. It has made possible increased handling capacity of 100,000 shipments per month, according to DHL. A mechanized system sorts and classifies shipments according to their declared value. For security, the facility features 20 closed-circuit TV cameras, including those that link directly with customs authorities. The gateway covers 2,600 square meters and can simultaneously handle the unloading of three air-cargo containers at the approximate rate of 1,500 pieces per hour. The new call center, located within DHL's main hub in Mexico City, handles more than 18,000 daily calls and provides tracking of more than 40,000 shipments, the company said. Nearly 93 percent of incoming calls are answered in less than 15 seconds, it claimed. The two new facilities represent a combined investment by DHL of some $6.2m.
